At last – an inexpensive, comprehensive, beautifully photographed resource book containing all the information you need to successfully grow the very best perennials for northern gardens. Each plant genus given a thorough once-over by The Renegade Gardener!
“Yes, some (Nepeta) varieties can get a little floppy, so grow them at the front of the bed, where they will flop forward with conviction …”
When Lone Pine contacted me about writing a series of books for our two great states I said sure, provided I be allowed say exactly what I want. Don Williamson, my editor, barely touched a word, bless his heart. (More about the book and sample pages below.)

About the Book
Remember, you don’t need to live in the two states to enjoy this
book. It should help gardeners in any state or province hosting the usually
ignored USDA gardening Zones 2 – 5. This book covers it all—my introduction to gardening in the north, sections on designing perennial gardens, preparing the garden, selecting perennials, planting and care, propagation, problems and pests, followed by 267 pages devoted to what I consider a complete list of essential perennials—86 genera with recommended species and varieties for each genus—over 600 perennials in all!
I wrote the intros for each perennial, recommending use, placement, and
pointing out the plant’s positive attributes, and in some case, its
flaws (and how to work around them). I chose the species and varieties
of each perennial family to recommend, basing my choices on the best and
most available varieties for your northern garden (and thanks to Mike Heger
of Ambergate Gardens for his further fine-tuning!).
Lone Pine is a Canadian publisher based in Alberta, and they put out beautiful
gardening books. This book is a smart size, with rounded corners that won’t
get beat up when you pop it in your bag or toss it on the front seat of
the car; you’ll want to take it with you every time you visit the
nursery.
Combining Perennials for Minnesota and Wisconsin with my books Annuals for Minnesota and Wisconsin and Tree & Shrub Gardening in Minnesota and Wisconsin gives you a complete, affordable library covering all aspects of gardening in USDA Zones 2-5.
